Knitting and knits in action

Here I am, wearing my shawl and eating a hot dog, during a cool evening last week. (This is on a pseudo-boat, the Frying Pan.)

Knitting on the Staten Island Ferry

We took an impromptu trip on the Staten Island Ferry on Friday night. Opportunity to knit, of course! (P.S. I happened to work on a freelance project last week about movies that were filmed in lower Manhattan, and two movies that feature the area prominently were Working Girl, obviously,* and less obviously, Green Card. Apparently all of Green Card takes place in Foley Square, which is down near the Courthouse. Who knew?)

*If you’ve seen Working Girl, then you remember that Melanie Griffith’s character lives on Staten Island and takes the ferry to work. I don’t remember the movie super clearly, but I remember rooting for Sigourney Weaver, just like I rooted for Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. I’m not sure what my fondness for the boss character says about me, though I think in both of those cases Sigourney and Meryl are better actors than Melanie and Anne Hathaway.)

I took rooted for Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada – Anna Hathaways character was a total wash-out to give up everything that was being offered her – I always stop the DVD before the end when I watch it as I can’t bear seeing her give everything up.

As for Working Girl – the opening sequence with Carly Simon singing “Let the River Run” over the spiraling aerial shots of the statue of liberty fill my chest with joy every time I see that movie – it epitomises NY to me

it’s been a long time since i’ve seen Working Girl but i think there is a nice scene at night near the ferry terminal where Harrison Ford drops Melanie Griffith off at the ferry.

i mean the scenery and atmosphere are nice. and i also think there might be a Sex in the City episode that riffs off that scene in the same spot with SJP and an older guy in politics who wants to date her. gosh the trivial stuff i know – but NYC is just movie and TV land for me having not been there.

i liked the Green Card movie – it was goofy in an endearing way.

that’s a great photograph of you in your shawl.
